  • This workshop is a vibrant exploration of Indian folk dance, specifically focusing on the styles of Khoriya from Haryana and Dal Khai from Odisha. Designed for groups, participants will be split into teams on the spot. The workshop will delve into the fundamentals of these folk dance forms, their cultural significance, and how to make use of space and change formations to create visually stunning choreography. The focus will be on group synchronisation, spatial awareness, and the dynamics of changing formations. By the end of the session, participants will have learned a unique group choreography piece that celebrates the richness of Indian folk dance. The requirement for the workshop is long, flowy skirts. We will also have some skirts available for participants who might not have them.

  • This workshop is designed for duets, focusing on the dynamic interplay between two dancers in an Indian folk context. You do not need to sign up with a partner; a duet will be created on the spot. Participants will explore the nuances of Indian folk dance with an emphasis on partner work and creating complementary movements. By the end of the session, participants will have learned a duet piece that beautifully showcases traditional Indian folk dance. We recommend participants to wear skirts for this workshop. This promises to be an engaging and enriching experience.

  • Lavani is a folk dance art from Maharashtra, celebrated for its vibrant energy and expressive gestures. Traditionally performed to the beats of the Dholki, a percussion instrument, Lavani was originally a form of entertainment and morale booster for tired soldiers during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, it is performed during celebrations, events, and has been incorporated into theatrical performances and movies.

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the powerful rhythm and quick tempo of Lavani. • Kalbeliya is a gypsy folk dance from the snake charmer community of Rajasthan, India, which imbibes the free spirit of the desert with its tumultuous improvisation, sensuality, snake-like undulations, and fiery twirls. It was inscribed in 2010 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, that Kalbeliya is “Transmitted from generation to generation, the songs and dances form part of an oral tradition for which no texts or training manuals exist. Song and dance are a matter of pride for the Kalbeliya community, and a marker of their identity at a time when their traditional traveling lifestyle and role in rural society are diminishing.” Through her Kalbeliya movement workshop, Aakansha Maheshwari strives to share this tradition of the gypsies from Rajasthan and allow participants to experience the free and vivacious spirit of the desert.

  • Step into the rhythmical world of Kathak, one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance. This workshop will guide you through the intricate footwork, swift spins, and expressive storytelling that Kathak is renowned for.
